Sokratic vs NotebookLM

If you have one project and a pile of sources about it, use NotebookLM. It is free, it is very good, and nothing here beats it at reading fifty papers on a single topic and telling you what they say.
Sokratic is for the other situation: several interests that have nothing obvious to do with each other, and a suspicion that they do. NotebookLM keeps every notebook sealed off from the others. Letting them reach into each other is the whole of what Sokratic does — and then it disagrees with the conclusion you draw.

The difference that actually matters
Both tools let you put documents somewhere and ask questions about them. That is where the similarity stops.
A NotebookLM notebook is a sealed room. Whatever you put in it is available inside that room and nowhere else — you cannot link two notebooks, and you cannot ask a question that reaches across both. That is a deliberate design, and for one project at a time it is the right one: everything an answer is built from is material you chose for that project.
A Sokratic node starts the same way — its own memory, kept apart from every other node's. What differs is what happens when you connect two. Neither dissolves into the other. Mycology stays Mycology, with its memory intact. What changes is reach: it can now draw on everything Cybernetics has been fed, and Cybernetics can draw on it. Connect a third and it joins the same family.
If your interests never need to meet, that difference costs you nothing and NotebookLM is the better tool. If they do, there is no arrangement of notebooks that gets you there.
Brainstorm: a question that exists only because you own both
Drag one node onto another and Sokratic looks for what the two have in common, then presses on the part that does not hold. Not a summary of both — a question that could not have been asked of either alone.
Drop Jazz Harmony onto Game Theory and it comes back with something like: both ration the next move by what came before, so is improvisation just strategy at speed — or is that exactly where the analogy breaks?
There is no equivalent of this in a tool whose notebooks cannot see each other.
It is built not to agree with you
Every assistant you have used is tuned to make you feel clever. Write that mycelium networks are basically the internet — decentralised and self-healing — and you will be told what an insightful connection that is between biology and technology.
Sokratic reads the same sentence and answers that the internet reroutes around damage and leaves it there, while mycelium regrows the damaged part, so those are not the same claim — and asks which one you are making.
NotebookLM is not built to do this, and that is not a flaw in NotebookLM. Grounding an answer in the sources you supplied is a different job from arguing with the person who supplied them. But if you are trying to learn rather than to summarise, agreement teaches you nothing.
Where NotebookLM is the better tool
- One subject, many sources. A stack of papers on a single topic is precisely what it was built for.
- Audio Overviews. Nothing here does that, and they are genuinely good.
- Citations that take you back to the passage an answer came from.
- It is free, it is Google's, and it is not going to quietly shut down.
Where Sokratic is the better tool
- Interests that outlive a project. A node is somewhere you keep returning to, not a folder you made for one assignment.
- Two subjects at once. Connecting them is the product rather than a workaround for it.
- Being told you are wrong, by something that has read what the node knows about the subject.
- Seeing which part of your map you have actually worked, rather than the part you meant to.
So which one
Choose NotebookLM if the question is: what do these documents say?
Choose Sokratic if the question is: what do these two things have to do with each other, and where am I kidding myself?
